Maze Runner: The Death Cure” left audiences feeling distressed but also with a sense of closure when the blockbuster hit the big screens Friday, Jan. 26. While “Death Cure” sets a pretty high bar for upcoming action movies, the film does fall short of living up to expectations.

On a risky mission to rescue his friends, the main character, Thomas, and his group are trying to break into WCKD’s city throughout the movie. Approaching the end of their journey, Thomas and his group end up leaving with more than they had bargained for.

From start to finish, viewers can expect to be bombarded with loads of action and chaos. Unlike some movies that start with a slow and uneventful exposition, “Death Cure” throws viewers right into the middle of a train heist in the beginning. While the action and explosions are appreciated, unfortunately this movie falls into the trap of movies playing in the main characters’ favors. From bullets that hit everything but the characters to events planned just a little too perfect, some scenes in the cinema give off an unrealistic feel.

Throughout the movie, the characters’ actions and decisions make viewers wonder who really are the good people. The tension between the characters is crafted well and is portrayed exceptionally by the actors in the film, such as Dylan O’Brien as Thomas and Pirates of the Caribbean star Kaya Scodelario as Teresa. The way the actors speak really makes viewers consider all of the characters’ thoughts, not just the protagonists.

Overall, “The Maze Runner: Death Cure” provides a fun, exciting and thrilling experience but does give a lot of typical action movie vibes. For book-lovers and people who have seen the previous movies, this film is definitely one to watch. It simultaneously provides the closure fans have been looking for and the opportunity to see their favorite characters one last time.
