Hoping to end their league play on a high note, head softball coach Lori Alexander and her team are buckling down as they have come to their final four games of the regular season.

The varsity softball girls are 9-3 in district with a 14-4 overall record. The girls are currently in second place with a two-game lead over third place, while Flower Mound has a powerful 12-0 reign over 6-6A.

Coach Alexander said she is most proud that her girls keep winning.

“I feel our pitching is by far better than most other pitchers in the district,” Alexander said. “But I also feel that when we are hitting, our hitting is too.”

Even though the team only has four losses on the year, Alexander said her girls can always do better.

“I still don’t feel like we are quite playing to our potential,” Alexander said. “We need to be more consistent hitting the ball and scoring more.”

We are better prepared for [Plano West] this time for sure

Last week the girls dropped their second matchup against Flower Mound this year, 2-0. Jaguars pitcher Claire Lefner only allowed one hit with 14 strikeouts.

Junior Maribeth Gorsuch said that the team’s key to winning games is getting hits in clutch situations.

“We will get little hits here and there, but we will strand runners,” Gorsuch said.

The team’s hottest hitters right now include junior Maribeth Gorsuch [.510 average, 4 home runs according to Dallas Morning News], junior Lindsay French [.355 average], and junior Tommi Goodman [.352 average].

With four of the sixteen district games left, a playoff picture is in sight, if the girls can close out the season with a couple more wins.

Junior outfielder Lindsay French said the team needs to hit better in order to keep their status in the district.

“Our defense is our biggest strength,” French said. “When our bats aren’t going we have to work even harder with our defense.”

The girls will be facing Plano West at home Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Lady Wolves are the only other team to defeat Lewisville this year, with the exception of Flower Mound.

Alexander said she feels like they have a better chance at beating Plano West this time.

“We are better prepared for them this time for sure,” Alexander said. “I feel the weather and having to go back to back days was somewhat a factor in [last we played West]. It was just a lack of being consistent with the bats. We should give ourselves a much better chance on Tuesday.”
