Changing the world one person at a time

Junior World Affairs Council offers opportunities to serve

Changing the world through community service projects is a big part of the mission of the Junior World Affairs Council.

An organization that has been around at the main campus for over a decade,” JWAC’s motto is “changing the world one person at a time.”

JWAC members do a variety of community service projects. Some of the projects involve the school or the local community, such as Chalk the Walk for Homecoming and Keep Lewisville Beautiful. Other projects help fight world problems, like the drive to raise money for Heifer International, which provides cows and goats to poor villages to work toward ending world hunger.

There is a small membership fee of $5, or $20 including a club shirt, and the money is used for the various projects throughout the year. Also seniors can receive a graduation cord if they reach 100 hours of community service through JWAC.

The meetings are on Wednesdays during A Block lunch every week in English teacher Jayne Keane’s room [E215].

“In JWAC it is not a social club,” adviser Jayne Keane said. “We literally do community service and help educate members on how to make a difference in the community by the different service projects.”

JWAC is a unique club because a member’s participation in the club does not have to stop with graduation. It is actually part of a larger World Affairs Council, of which people of all ages can take part.

Senior and vice president Maria Lopez explained why she likes this organization.

“I joined JWAC for many reasons, one was because  it brought me closer together to some of my classmates that I didn’t have classes with but would go volunteer with,” Lopez said. “Another reason I stayed was because I loved to go help and volunteer when I had too much time on my hand.”

JWAC Senior Co-President Rosalie Gunnoe said she enjoyed being in JWAC because it is a club filled with amazing people.

“I like JWAC because it is fun and I love knowing that I am helping people all over the world,” Gunnoe said. “It is rewarding to know all the people who have been positively impacted by the community service projects that JWAC has done. I have met interesting, intelligent people, who were also members.”
