ZOOMING IN

Q: What sparked your aspiration of wanting to become a fashion designer?

A: When I was growing up, I always wanted to be a basketball player, but I started to notice what I really liked about my game is my appearance. And the more it kept growing, I began to get into fashion. But my attraction for fashion really sparked when I saw Ian Connor wearing a Rick Owens jacket. He was a superstar without the ball. I started to lose my love for basketball, and ever since, fashion has meant so much to me.”

Q: Who or what inspires you?

A: “Ian Connor, Travis Scott, Kanye West, Will Fry, and Raf Simmons. There’s more, but these are my favorite inspirations.”

Q: If you could work with any brand what brand would it be and why?

A: “Probably Will Fry. He is an independent designer, but if he ever got the chance to add on people, I would love to work there. Mostly because the creativity with the clothing and the expression is different. Being different is what attracts me the most.”

Q: You mentioned basketball earlier, do you still play?

A: “No. I was playing basketball at the gym when I went up for a layup, and in mid-air I got hit pretty bad. I fell down on my left knee first then landed on my body. Afterwards I couldn’t get up. I went to the doctor, and they said if I ever want to play again, it couldn’t be serious, because my knee wouldn’t be able to withstand serious basketball.”

Q: Did someone teach you how to draw, or did you learn on your own?

A: No one actually taught me. My dad knows how to draw really well, but he never taught me anything. It was kind of natural, or a talent, if you want to say that.”

Q: H0w did you become so talented with a camera?

A: During my freshman year my mother showed me a portrait, and it was amazing. Then I saw a photo of a designer, and I was already starting to like fashion, but I kept on seeing more and more images that were great, so I decided to try it out. I started off by taking a lot of pictures with my phone. Then I decided to take photography, and the class made me even more interested. Now it’s easy. I’m really spontaneous, but no one sees my work because I’m focusing more on my designs. But photography is a great way to show emotions through an image of frozen time.”

Q: Are fashion, photography and art ways of expressing yourself?

A: “Yes, all three are the way I express myself as a person and throughout my experiences in my life and childhood, and what comes for my future.”

Q: Any designs or clothes we should be on the lookout for?

A: “Yes. The Von Scott and Von Harris collaboration ‘Blind Youth’ tee. It’s a expression of our youth and how we can all be different, but at the same time, blind to maturity and growth as a person.”
