Get to know Number 4 Ethan Volini as he reflects on his high school experience

Q: If you could be any movie/TV show character, who would you be and why?
A: “Easy. Alfe from ‘The Problem Solverz.’ He likes pizza and pizza is Italian.”
Q: What is a song you wish you had written?
A: “I do wish I would’ve had a hand in the production of the Alvin and the Chipmunks’ cover of “Turn Down for What” that appeared in their Road Chip movie back in 2015. There’s something about those chipmunks’ voices that really gets me, well, turnt up.”
Q: What is one talent you wish you had?
A: “I wish I could type at a decent speed. I type like a guy picking crumbs off the table with his finger.”
Q: What has been your most embarrassing moment in high school?
A: “One time during band class, after writing something down on my music, I brought my arm down from the music stand. However, on its way down, the bell of my saxophone tapped the inside of my arm, right on the funny-bone. I couldn’t move my arm for five minutes. I was a laughingstock. My reputation, tarnished. My ‘friends’ wouldn’t talk to me, they wouldn’t take me seriously. Oh, how they made sport of my pain. Never will I play the saxophone again.”
Q: What is the funniest joke you’ve ever heard?
A: “I asked my old man if I could go ice-skating on the lake. He told me, ‘Wait till it gets warmer.’”

Q: What college will you attend? What is your intended major?
A: “I will be attending Texas A&M and intend to major in engineering.”
Q: What extracurriculars have you been in throughout high school?
A: “I am a part of the band, Mu Alpha Theta and National Honor Society.”
Q: What was the most challenging aspect about balancing extracurriculars and academics?
A: “During marching season, it can be tough to get started on homework after rehearsal. Sometimes, it can take until around 9 p.m. to get started, with having to eat dinner and showering and all. However, band is definitely worth the long hours.”
Q: What class was the hardest for you? Why?
A: “AP Physics I & II has been a struggle to get through. I don’t know what it is, but I find it difficult to comprehend a lot of the stuff we cover in class. With this online school, I’d say it’s even tougher.”
Q: Who has helped you the most throughout this journey? How have they?
A: “I feel that my friends have been some of my greatest motivators. They provide great competition, and I often use them as a measure of when I should stop procrastinating my work. It works most of the time.”
Q: What has been the most memorable part of high school?
A: “I do not know why [but] there is something so special about getting to dive tongue-first into a mountain of chicken fingers, crinkle-cut french fries and buttery-toasted bread, all oozing that creamy pink Canes sauce. The fact that I indulge in this euphoria with six other upstanding gentlemen? It is hard to beat perfection.”
Q: What do you miss most about traditional high school over at-home learning?
A: “I wish I could see my friends. I want to see Nivio’s mustache! I also think it would make understanding concepts easier with the teachers present.”
Q: What advice would you give to your freshman self?
A: “Keep truckin’, hombre. And don’t be afraid to replace your coleslaw with extra fries.”
Q: What are you most excited about regarding college?
A: “I’m interested to see how dorm living is. I hope it will be some great fun.”
Q: Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years?
A: “I hope to see myself at the top of some kind of pyramid scheme. If not that, having a well-paying fun job will do just fine.”
