ZOOMING IN
Q: How many figures have you made so far?
A: “[I have] 75 models in a giant box that I’ve been putting it off, I have that and a lot more that I’ve already worked through”
Q: How did you get into “Warhammer”?
A: “I had just broken up with one of my exes, and I had a lot more time on my hands, so I thought ‘Oh, these Space Marine guys kind of look like the power armor from “Fallout,” and that’s cool. So maybe I’ll try that out.’ It took a couple days, but I found a store up in Grapevine I got all my stuff from. I just showed up one day. I said ‘Hey, I want to do this.’ They said, ‘Oh, cool. What do you know about it?’ I said ‘Nothing, teach me everything.’”
Q: What do you like most about “Warhammer”?
A: “The story is one thing. The story is very large, but I’ll just eat it. I just get into it. [Painting the figures] was also a big part of it.”
Q: What would you showcase to someone looking to get into Warhammer?
A: “The factions are a good starting point. It depends on the vibe of the person. If you’re somebody into the order of the imperium of mankind, then go for Space Marines. These are your super soldiers. If you’re a little more like ‘I want to just have a good time with the game,’ they would love the orcs. They’re just there to have fun. If someone’s a little more into edgy and punk stuff, maybe the Chaos Space Marines, Dark Eldar, maybe Genestealers or Tyranids.”
Q: How do you acquire the materials to assemble the figures?
A: “They do a cool thing every month. You can show up, and they’ll give you a free monthly figure. That’s a good start. You get your little plastic screws, get the parts on it and clip them off. Then, you glue them together and paint it.”
Q: How much time do you spend painting a single figure?
A: “I don’t spend as much time painting as I want to, but it takes most days of the week. I’m always kind of thinking about it. It’s always in my head, even when I’m not painting.”
Q: Do you plan to make your own figures with your own parts?
A: “I’ve already kind of dabbled in that. The thing about “Warhammer” is you can assemble them and paint them all on your own – you can do whatever you want to them. So you’d be like, ‘Oh, I like the look of this helmet on this guy,’ [you can] go ahead. I’ve done a lot of taping things together and ‘Frankenstein-ing’ them. They’re like Legos, but more serious.”
