Q: What college will you attend? What is your intended major and why that major?
A: “I’ll be attending NCTC, North Central Texas College. My intended major will be computer engineering or electric engineering, I haven’t decided yet. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been interested in electronics and I’ve always been on my computer. I’m just really interested [and] I like to know what makes it compute.”
Q: What extracurriculars have you been involved in throughout high school?
A: “I’ve been in business professionals of America, NHS and I’ve been in academic decathlon.”
Q: What was the most challenging aspect about balancing extracurriculars and academics?
A: “To be honest, it wasn’t really challenging. I’m surprised that I’m in the top 10. I guess, you [have] to balance your time [and] balance your hobbies. I wasn’t trying to be in the top ten, it just came to be.”
Q: What class was the most challenging for you? Why?
A: “AP chemistry mainly because I’ve never been good with science. There’s so many concepts that will deal with things that are not really applicable to the real world. Like moles, the units are so new to you, you’ve never used them before.”
Q: Who has helped you the most throughout these last four years? How have they helped you?
A: “My father. He’s been really inspirational to me, pushing me always. He’s never really been hard on my grades, [nor] stayed on top of my grades. He’s just been really proud that I have good grades.”
Q: What has been the most memorable part of high school?
A: “Playing games with my friends. Every single class, I have a friend [and] we’ve always played games. So, we tried some ways to have fun.”
Q: What advice would you give to your freshman self?
A: “Not to take it so seriously. Mainly because I think my freshman self was so worried about the grades and not the relationships I would make with the people around me. I was focused on my appearance and the actual connection I made with people. I think that’s something I would tell myself to really not pay attention to what others think.”
Q: What are you most excited about regarding college?
A: “Learning, I want to learn more about electro engineering and computers. [I look forward to] getting a degree and working a job.”
Q: Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years?
A: “Owning my own business [by] working [and] fixing other people’s electronics. Or working for a big company.”
Q: What would you change about your high school experience?
A: “Take harder classes. I’ve taken a lot of hard classes, but I think I’ve focused a little too much on electives. Also [to] focus more about the learning and not the grades themselves. Learning is a really important aspect of high school – that’s why we’re here. I think the whole top ten thing can also encourage somebody [to] focus on grades and not the actual learning.”
