When first entering Keri Page’s classroom, nothing seems out of the ordinary. The room is cold, slightly humid and has a quiet atmosphere – just like every chemistry classroom.
However, newcomers realize when they look around the classroom, there are baby dolls hanging from the ceiling right above her desk.
“I thought [she] was crazy,” sophomore Brooklyn McGuire said. “Many other students shared the same sentiment when they first uttered upon the hanging dolls.”
Page has already grown accustomed to the weird stares and double takes that people make when entering her classroom. Both students and staff alike have been perturbed when witnessing the decorations for the first time. However, the hanging dolls are only the tip of the iceberg, as her actual collection is full of doll heads.
She didn’t see any clear indicators that this would be a niche hobby of hers when she was growing up, but there were signs.
“I would get up and tie my Barbies onto [a] fan and then turn it on and watch their heads and bodies fly off,” Page said.
Page is surprised that she enjoys collecting the dolls, since she doesn’t like the horror genre much. The collection started on Halloween of 2017 while she was shopping for supplies for a chemistry lab.
“[There] was a doll on one of the aisles, and it was all by itself,” Page said. “There were no others around it, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s going home with me.’ So I bought it for myself and hung it in my room. And from then on, I have started collecting doll heads at antique stores.”
Her collection currently consists of 30 doll heads. Most were bought in antique stores, but some were found by chance outdoors. A lot of people that find out about this hobby see it as satanic, including her husband, but Page herself doesn’t see it that way.
“I don’t really read anything into it as devilish or witchy,” Page said. “I am just the creepy doll head lady.”
Physics teacher AJ Chelliah was also surprised to see a severed doll head in Page’s cabinet for the first time, but they quickly accepted it as just a part of who Page is as a person.
“Honestly, it made a lot more things make sense in Page,” Chelliah said. “If she’s the kind of person to keep a beheaded doll in her cabinet, all the other strange things she does as a person just kind of makes sense. If you’ve ever had a full conversation with Page, you would know that she’s just a very eccentric person with eccentric tastes and an interesting outlook on life that involves severed doll heads.”
Page continues to look for heads to add to the collection. She’s still astonished by the fact that she ended up liking such a niche hobby at all.
“I think I’ve always been fascinated with them, I just never really put much thought into it,” Page said. “And that’s just my story. I love collecting creepy dolls.”
