Review: ‘Adventures’ shows potential
Dylan Gardner’s debut album reminiscent of Train
Up-and-coming teen artist Dylan Gardner broke into the music scene with a promising musical sound on his new album, “Adventures in Real Time.” Gardner has pushed himself to his full potential to become a teen pop star. His first album may not make him a superstar, but he has the potential of making it there.
His album is full of catchy songs like “Let’s Get Started,” an upbeat song that brightens the day with the repetition of the title throughout the entire song. This song is about him wanting to get started in a relationship with this person that he really likes.
These days it seems like every teen boy is singing about the same subject, relationships. Though it’s a very popular subject in music right now, this choice makes it harder for Gardner to distinguish himself from other artists. “Heroes Tonight” is another upbeat song where Gardner describes wanting to be a hero and being king of the world.
Most of his songs are upbeat except “The Actor.” This song really didn’t work with the album, and sounded very dull. He could have worked on this song a bit more, but then again this is his first album. The song is not radio ready like “Let’s Get Started.”
Dylan says his material is strongly influenced by the Beatles, but his music doesn’t really seem to reflect it. Dylan’s vocal style is raspier than The Beatles. Gardner’s sound is also more modern than The Beatles.
A better band for comparison is Train, which fits Dylan’s pop/rock genre. Train’s album, “California 37”, and Dylan’s album, “Adventures in Real Time”, are catchy enough to keep you listening to them. Of course they both talk about love and life in general. Train has more of a mature sound when it comes to describing love, while Dylan Gardner’s love songs are more of a puppy love. And Dylan Gardner has more of an immature voice than the Train lead singer Patrick Monohan.
The song “With a Kiss” stands out from the rest of the album. A more electronic sound gives it a faster pace that gets you moving. Lyrically, it’s weaker than the other songs, and doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the album. It is the most danceable song on the album.
Overall Dylan doesn’t have an amazing voice, but still rocks all of his songs with a great rhythm and beat. He should definitely continue with his music because he has potential to improve his music quality and voice.
More teenagers than adults will enjoy his music, but that isn’t bad at all. His music keeps me in a good mood and that is all that matters.
