Throwback Thursday: TV shows
Every day people across the world tune in to see their favorite TV shows, but once their shows go off the air, do they really care about it anymore? Probably not. Most usually find something new to watch. For this edition of Throwback Thursday, I’m going back to those shows that caught the attention of many and were afterwards forgotten. Two are still on air, but it doesn’t seem as common for people to tune into the new episodes on a regular basis.
“Friends” (1994 – 2004)
“Friends,” starting in 1994, goes through the lives of Rachel, Monica, Ross, Joey, Phoebe and Chandler who all live in New York and share apartments. The six friends go through the ups and downs of life and still manage to be friends. This popular sitcom has been and is deeply considered one of the best shows of all time. “Friends” produced ten total seasons and was nominated for a total of 62 Primetime Emmys in its run. For a person who has seen every episode, I think this is one of the best TV shows ever. Nothing beats “Friends.”
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1997 – 2003)
A show about a vampire slayer named Buffy, believe it or not was a big hit in the late ‘90s and early 2000’s. The show focused on Buffy and her two friends, Willow and Xander. A main recurring theme for every season involves Buffy and her friends often fighting vampires, werewolves and demons to save the world. Throughout it’s entirety, the show reached between four to six million viewers and has been ranked 41st on TV Guide’s list of Greatest TV Shows of All Time. It was also nominated for several Emmy and Golden Globe awards, and won a total of three Emmy awards.
“Hannah Montana” (2006 – 2011)
Sorry, but I had to throw in at least one Disney show and I knew exactly the perfect one, “Hannah Montana.” Starting in 2006, the hit show gives the audience the story of Miley Stewart who lives a double life. By day she’s a normal teenage girl; by night she’s Hannah Montana, a famous singer with blonde hair. Throughout the series you see the day to day life of Miley, her family and her friends. The series produced four seasons and received favorable reviews from critics. Also, it produced a musical film adaptation, “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” which released in 2009 and grossed more than 155.5 million worldwide.
“The Simpsons” (1989 – present)
The longest running animated comedy focuses on the lives of the Simpson family who live in a fictional town called Springfield. It often mocks American culture, society and conditions. The show produced a movie called “The Simpsons Movie” in 2007, which grossed more than 527 million in the box office. The popular show has a total of 32 Primetime Emmys and 30 Annie Awards. Though the show is still on, it definitely deserves to be on this list.
“SpongeBob SquarePants” (1999 – present)
Another show that’s still on the air, “SpongeBob SquarePants” is most definitely the most popular children’s cartoon of our generation. Since its start in 1999, SpongeBob has been on for 17 years and has produced a total of nine seasons with 196 episodes. I know you’re thinking “Why is on this list?” I included SpongeBob on this list because I predict SpongeBob will go off the air very soon. These rumors have been going around for a while now, but through its run it has won two Emmys, six Annie Awards and 12 Kid’s Choice Awards.
