Fireworks went off in sync with the last 30 seconds of “Shake It Off” during Taylor Swift’s concert on Oct. 22 at Circuit of the Americas.

Taylor Swift welcomed a crowd of roughly 80,000 fans to her headline performance at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin on Oct. 22. Many people traveled from all over the world to be in attendance. This also happened to be her only performance of 2016; Swift took a break from live entertaining after ending her 1989 world tour last year.

Many of the people who visited the Circuit of the Americas attended only for Taylor Swift’s performance on Saturday. There were no Saturday-only tickets for sale, so all attendees were required to buy three-day general admission wristband tickets. Those who wanted to get closer to the stage were required to purchase the V.I.P. package. Circuit of the Americas also announced a new overall weekend attendance record of 269,889 people.

The security at Circuit of the Americas failed to plan for the large amount of people who attended. Although Swift’s performance was scheduled to start a 7 p.m., lines made up of thousands of fans started to form a few minutes before noon. Many of the people who were responsible for monitoring the crowds were unprepared volunteers who lacked enough information to answer the many questions that arose out from the anxious crowd. The lines of eager fans were overcrowded and disorganized.

The main gates were scheduled to open at 5:30 p.m., but did not open until 6. The fans were forced to wait in direct sunlight and by the time the gates opened, fans were already rowdy and demanding to see Taylor. After the concert ended, security made it difficult for people to find the exits by only providing a few for the ginormous crowd to leave.

During her 80 minute performance, Swift dazzled the crowd with several throwback songs that she normally doesn’t include on her set list such as  “22,” “Holy Ground” and “Sparks Fly.” Swift also played acoustic versions of “You Belong With Me” and “Fifteen.” She surprised the crowd by performing the song she co-wrote with Calvin Harris, “This Is What You Came For,” live for the first time. Swift made the song her own by adding a new twist and using her piano when she performed. She did not however introduce an album or any new songs that the crowd hoped she would. Throughout the performance choreographed fireworks were released throughout the show to create a visually stunning display.

Swift ended her concert by performing her hit “Shake It Off” to a grand finale of fireworks. The fireworks were in sync with the sick beat in the last thirty seconds of the song, creating a euphoric atmosphere of pure joy.
