Review: Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour inspires fans
Halsey leaves fans wanting more after eventful concert
The Hopeless Fountain Kingdom tour arrived last Thursday at the American Airlines Center, but the crowd wasn’t as hectic as it should have been. Halsey is a female artist on the rise in the alternative-pop charts with one platinum record.
The opening acts performance didn’t compare to the main show. Charli XCX was getting the crowd excited with her well-known classics like “Fancy” and “I Love It.” Special guest PARTYNEXTDOOR, however, wasn’t all that great. His voice was overpowered by the drums and his words were difficult to understand. Plus, the slow songs he chose to perform brought down the vibe before Halsey came on.
Halsey finally appeared 45 minutes after PARTYNEXTDOOR performed and started out the night with “Eyes Closed” on the stage filled with smoke. The stage was set up with three different levels and lights everywhere. During the third song, “Castle,” Halsey wanted everyone to jump once the beat dropped, but only half of the crowd did. This response wasn’t good enough for her, so she continued to motivate the crowd and get them to jump again.
After singing three songs nonstop, she finally started talking and labeled half of the crowd “House of Montague” and the other half “House of Capulet.” The names she gave were based on the theme of her album, Romeo and Juliet. She labeled the crowds because she wanted to have a contest to see which side would be the loudest.
Even though some musical artists claim to remember their fans, Halsey actually does. The next time she spoke to the crowd she was about to sing one of her more sad songs, “Sorry.” This song talks of how unaware she is to someone loving her. She reminisced meeting a couple who had just gotten to together when they initially met her. Now, three years later, they’re happily married. Halsey keeps a deep connection with every fan no matter how long ago they saw each other.
After her third outfit change, she ran down the middle into the screaming fans to stand on a platform that was glowing with koi fish spinning around in a circle. She began to dance with a backup dancer in water that was on the platform. The crowd went crazy while water was being splashed upon them.
The last song Halsey performed was “Hurricane.” The song describes how she perceives herself in her past relationship. Not only was lightning shown with the lights, but there was also a thunderstorm shown behind her on the transparent stairs and the screens while she sang. At the end of the song, she gave her farewell while purple butterflies and purple smoke released from the cannons, which left everyone wanting more.
Although the opening act and special guest weren’t all that great, Halsey made it up to fans with how great her performance was. She performed 23 songs and changed at least seven times all in one night. With smoke and flame cannons set up on certain areas on the stage, it brought an awesome show. This concert was probably one of the best concerts anyone could go to because of the inspiration and the easily relatable songs.
