‘Supernatural’: The little show that could
Celebrating the 300th episode with an emotional tribute
Into its 14th season, The CW’s “Supernatural” reached 300 episodes and produced another milestone with the episode, “Lebanon.” Although it’s renewed for a 15th season, the show continues to surprise its viewers. Eric Kripke, who created the NBC series “Revolution,” is the original creator of the hit TV show. However, after the fifth season, Eric stepped down as showrunner and other producers began to take over including Sera Gamble, Robert Singer and Jeremy Carver.
“Supernatural” focuses on two brothers, Sam Winchester, played by Jared Padalecki who is known as Dean Forester on “Gilmore Girls,” and Dean Winchester, played by Jensen Ackles who is known as Eric Brady in the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.” The brothers face an increasingly threatening landscape as they hunt monsters, such as Leviathan, Wendiego and Werewolves, across the globe.
In the beginning of the episode, there is a supernatural being who will have to be defeated by Sam and Dean, which leads up to the main plot. The viewers see how the brothers interact with their hometown in Lebanon, Kansas that reveals a new perspective of what the townsfolk know about Team Free Will 2.0 which consists of Sam, Dean, Castiel, an angel of the Lord portrayed by Misha Collins, and Lucifer’s son, Jack (Alexander Calvert). The fans were ecstatic to find out how the people in the town perceive them.
Before the episode aired on Thursday, Feb. 7, The CW announced Jeffrey Dean Morgan, known for his role as Negan on “The Walking Dead,” will come back as John Winchester, Sam and Dean’s father. John’s entrance was a suspenseful and emotional time for all three Winchesters.
They sit down together as the brothers catch their father up on the past 16 years while mentioning topics like the apocalypse and angelic beings who may or may not live with them. When they try to tell John that Mary Winchester, his used-to-be dead wife portrayed by Samantha Smith, was alive again, she walked in and the long lost lovers were reunited.
Because John is back, the timeline the brothers knew about changed. Castiel is now the version of himself from season 4, who is at full angelic power. Since this version of Castiel never met the Winchesters, Zachariah, an evil angel played by Kurt Fuller who died in the hands of Dean in season 5 episode 18 “Point of No Return,” is still alive.
When fans of the show found out John was coming back, they had mixed feelings about it but at the Seattle, Washington Supernatural convention, they had an episode viewing party where the fans were left feeling emotionally drained when the episode was over.
“Lebanon” showed multiple aspects of the show and was an emotional journey for all. With humor and sorrow, “Supernatural’s” 300th episode became a fan favorite. This episode deserves 4 out of 5 stars for a well-portrayed storyline with powerful emotion.
