English to recognize musical talent

The 2020 Brit Awards will be aired Tuesday, Feb.18 on ITV at 1:30 p.m.

Achievements of English pop music will be awarded in the 2020 annual Brit Awards by giving out a trophy to the winners of each category. Returning to host the award ceremony for the third time is English comedian, television presenter, actor and writer Jack Whitehall on Tuesday, Feb.18 on ITV at 1:30 p.m.

These are the predicted winners for this year’s nominations.

MALE SOLO ARTIST:

Nominees: Dave, Harry Styles, Lewis Capaldi, Michael Kiwanuka and Stormzy

And the winner is…. Harry Styles! Since releasing his debut self-titled album in 2017 and topping charts in 14 different countries after breaking apart from One Direction, Styles has given fans emotion-filled tracks with uniquely chosen beats; this was most recently seen in his latest album, “Fine Line,” released in 2019. His new tracks show more creative freedom with his storytelling skills in interesting music videos compared to his past work where he seems to hold himself back. 

FEMALE SOLO ARTIST:

Nominees: Charli XCX, FKA Twigs, Freya Ridings, Mabel and Mahalia

And the winner is…. Charli XCX! From her Myspace days to her latest album released in 2019, the improvement can be seen lyrically and production-wise. Fans praised the powerful and encouraging lyrics from her new album. Before the album dropped, it got leaked and she decided to re-make it. After finishing recording, she received a thumbs up from her team knowing the album would become a hit.

BEST GROUP:

Nominees: Bastille, Bring Me The Horizon, Coldplay, D-Block Europe and Foals

And the winner is…. Coldplay. With “Everyday Life” released on Friday, Nov. 22, 2019, it gave fans a unique expression with the number of instrumentals used. It became the band’s second-highest scoring album, debuting at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 7 on the US Billboard 200

SONG OF THE YEAR:

Nominees: “Ladbroke Grove” by AJ Tracey, “Giant” by Calvin Harris & Rag’n’Bone Man, “Location” by Dave feat. Burna Boy, “I Don’t Care” by Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber, “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi, “Don’t Call Me Up” by Mabel, “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” by Mark Ronson feat. Miley Cyrus, “Dancing With A Stranger” by Sam Smith and Normani, “Vossi Bop” by Stormzy and “Just You and I” by Tom Walker

And the winner is…. “Dancing With A Stranger” by Sam Smith and Normani. Released over a year ago on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2019, the track reached No. 3 in the UK and No. 7 in the US Billboard Chart, making it an unforgettable song for many fans as it makes them groove along. The track incorporates a mix of pop and ‘80s R&B beat while emphasizing lyrics of feeling lonely and past loves. 

MASTERCARD ALBUM OF THE YEAR:

Nominees: “Psychodrama” by Dave, “Fine Line” by Harry Styles, “Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent” by Lewis Capaldi, “Kiwanuka” by Michael Kiwanuka and “Heavy Is The Head” by Stormzy

And the winner is…. “Fine Line” by Harry Styles! After releasing his album, it received positive feedback from fans and debuted at No. 3 in the UK Albums Chart and No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2019 and 2020. It broke records as the biggest release while it had the third-largest sales week of 2019. With his unique sounds and soothing voice, Styles takes fans through a journey through being together in a relationship and finally realizing they will never be with each other.

INTERNATIONAL FEMALE SOLO ARTIST:

Nominees: Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Camila Cabello, Lana Del Rey and Lizzo

And the winner is…. Billie Eilish! After winning four big category Grammys for a total of five Grammys, alongside receiving “Best Pop Vocal Album” in the 62nd Grammy Awards, Eilish broke Mariah Carey’s record of being the youngest to receive multiple Grammys. With her meaningful and heartfelt lyrics, it’s easier for fans to relate to them and lets people know celebrities also go through the same everyday struggles an average person goes through.

INTERNATIONAL MALE SOLO ARTIST:

Nominees: Bruce Springsteen, Burna Boy, Dermot Kennedy, Post Malone and Tyler the Creator

And the winner is…. Tyler the Creator! His album “Igor” released in 2019 debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won “Best Rap Album” at the 62nd Grammy Awards. From being an artist since 2009, he has shown what hard work can do if one puts in the effort toward his or her passion. Although some people might not understand his performances or enjoy his style of music, he focuses on creating content for his fans who are true supporters.
