A24 Studios released their new horror movie on Dec. 6 titled “Y2K.” With the great reputation A24 Studios has, the retro scene horror movie failed to live up to A24 Studios name. The movie is supposed to replicate what happened in the year 2000 and what people thought it was going to be like.
The story is based in the “Y2K” era in the early 2000s. The movie starts with a day in the life of main character Eli (Jaeden Martell), who doesn’t do much but talk to his only friend Danny (Julian Dennison) on his computer. At the same time, Eli is talking to a girl online who he has had a crush on for a long time, Laura. (Rachel Zegler).
The beginning of the movie was promising and had the audience intrigued with an actual storyline to follow. It seemed like a typical start of a movie that was bound to have some horror creep in as it got deeper into the 90-minute film.
Eli and Danny continue to hang out and talk about a party they wanted to attend held by Soccer Chris (The Kid LAROI). They heard everyone from their school would attend and it was welcome to anyone. They contemplated for a bit but after some hard thought, they decided to go.
Once arriving at Chris’ house, the duo is overwhelmed with the amount of people at the party. Eventually they blend in and join in on the fun. As the party progresses, the crowd is shocked by a noise made upstairs. They find that someone has died from the ceiling fan in the room. Then it turns into chaos as every piece of technology becomes corrupted and starts killing the teens.
This scene overall just felt way too sudden and rushed. It felt as if A24 were trying to push the plot way too fast which they did and it was poorly executed.
The characters who had an important role died within the house massacre scene which lasted about 10 minutes. This made the audience disappointed as they felt the characters who died could’ve had stronger roles and potential. But at the end, A24 trashed the characters like it was nothing and left only Eli and Laura as the two main characters.
It also felt like the main characters did not have much of a story. A24 didn’t explain their story enough and lacked that introduction. Their main target was to get to the plot immediately.
Overall, the movie lacked everything in the checkbox. It was rushed, the CGI was lazy, and the acting was not convincing. The movie however is somewhat credible for the comedy. It made the audience laugh, but in the end, the comedy did not save it from being a good movie. The movie deserves a generous 2 out of 10.
