Disney’s live action “Snow White” released in theaters on Friday, March 21. The anticipated musical fantasy directed by Marc Webb brings the Disney princess story to life, as Walt Disney Pictures previously made many other live action princess movies like “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin”. The main characters are Snow White (Rachel Zegler), the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot) and Jonathan (Andrew Burnap).
The story brings a beautiful aspect of Snow White and her courageous story as a Disney princess. There were slight differences from the 1937 film than this year’s movie, with Prince Charming being replaced by Johnathan, who is a bandit that fights in the name of Snow White’s father. A couple other changes in the film were Snow White not waiting for her love interest, the Evil Queen being given a different death than the original fate and the Evil Queen killing Snow White’s dad.
While the release of Snow White has only been 6 days, the opening weekend box office has gone to $87 million globally. It has also received 42% on Rotten Tomatoes and 47% on Metric.
This movie stirred controversy throughout the filming and release, with controversy arising around Zegler receiving the role to play Snow White. Zegler, being of Colombian descent, has received backlash with her playing a significant role, despite her being a person of color. Regardless, Zegler’s acting was incredibly phenomenal portraying such a classic character. With her past acting in “West Side Story” and “Hunger Games Songbirds and Snakes,” her experience with musical fantasy films are staggering.
Overall, the film wasn’t as good as it was anticipated to be. Disney princess movies are highly anticipated and compared to “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin” live action, fans were somewhat disappointed with this film’s outcome. Zegler’s performance was one of the only positive aspects and carried the movie with her voice and acting.
The change of storyline was also not needed and did not improve the storyline whatsoever. The Evil Queen’s death in the original film was significant to the ending of the film, so changing the Evil Queen’s fate was unnecessary.
Overall, this movie is definitely for younger audiences who love Disney movies, but the accuracy was not truly there. Disney’s Snow White movie is a 6 out of 10 across the board.
