Amazon MGM Studios and MRC released their action thriller, “G20” on Amazon Prime Video on Thursday, April 10. This film stars Viola Davis as U.S. President Danielle Sutton who must use her military and governing skills to defend her family and leaders when terrorists take over the G20 conference venue.
In the movie, the president’s family has Marsai Martin as Serena Sutton, Christopher Farrar as Demetrius Sutton and Anthony Anderson as Derek Sutton. The producers did great family casting and the allegiance that they felt Davis owed was the emotional part because they showed love and respect for her as a president and mother.
The ensemble music of the film raised suspense to what surprise happened next. The parts that were adrenaline rushing was when a hostage or victim almost gets killed until a hero comes at the last second to save them. Like when Agent Manny (Ramon Rodriguez) jumps in and takes a bullet for the president when she almost gets shot. He shows devotion and loyalty to Davis and stays at her side at all times to protect her, which was very loving.
Also, there were many scenes that made the audience’s heart drop. Derek Sutton was shot but he survived from the secret bulletproof vest, although he was unconscious for a few minutes. The scene where Rutledge (Antony Starr) was stabbed in his neck and everyone thought he was dead on the floor but a few minutes later, he disappeared and kidnapped the president’s daughter. The worst for last, Starr and Davis were hanging off of the leaning helicopter. While they showed a scene of Starr falling off, they later showed that Davis was still hanging on to the bottom of the helicopter, which was a big cliffhanger. These things got the audience on the edge of their seats.
Besides the intense parts, the combat was off the chain. Some violent scenes were ‘caught-off-guard,’ but Davis was doing her thing and her military skills came intact for sure. Audiences were left rooting for her when she kept taking out Rutledge’s terrorist soldiers with her machine-gun, which was epic.
However, when this film was released, it got mixed opinions about the character development and plot. Some audiences say this project was cringe and Davis was not a good world leader in how she represented herself to the terrorists. Some say the movie wasn’t entertaining enough and that it was too long. Although, some audiences express that Viola Davis in the lead role is a redemption and makes the movie worth watching for action genre fans. Also, a comment on how this action plot represents injustice and empowerment in the real world, which is logical and true.
Ultimately, this film had a lot of strengths and suspense, which made it worth watching and the location being in Cape Town, South Africa, which was a great idea as well. It would be super cool and intense to see if Rutledge survives his fall and comes back to seek revenge on the president’s family. Aside from that, this was a well put together movie from Amazon MGM Studios and it fairly deserves a 9 out of 10.
