Pop singer Kali Uchis released her fifth studio album “Sincerely,” on Friday, May 9. She partnered up with Capitol Records to produce this album and as a tease, she released her first single “Sunshine and Rain…” on March 27 and her second single “ILYSMIH” on April 29.
In the beginning, the album starts off with a beautiful violin and harp melody in the first track “Heaven is a home…” Which draws the listeners in and gives off a mystical vibe.
“Sugar! Honey! Love!” Is the second track on the album. Kali hits her high notes so amazingly. This particular song brings out the most of her vocals, which fills the void and has the feeling of being alive and passionate. It was extremely cinematic and blended elements with R&B and soul. Capitol Records and Kali Uchis worked together to create a powerful atmosphere that complements her vocal performance. Also, the meaning behind the song was to overcome her past of hardship and betrayal. Kali also shows optimism and the repeated lyrics, “Sugar, honey, love” symbolizes both a literal and figurative need for healing and affection.
The third track on the album is “Lose My Cool” and the rhythm somewhat resembles the songs on her first album “Isolation” because of the way Kali sings. It’s soft and subtle, yet still vibrant. Besides, this track is structured in two parts with the beginning as an adoring tone; having a crush. “See, I was trying to keep my cool, ‘cause no one wants to act a fool.” The tone changes mid-song to symbolize romantic hopelessness and the tone of her lyrics change, too. The seventh track “Territorial” also has bold lyrics and this song describes Kali’s protective nature and willingness to stand up for who she loves. She also embraces Elvis Presley’s popular tune, “(You’re The) Devil in Disguise” to introduce a villainous touch.
The tracks, “For: You” and “ILYSMIH” expresses the depth and intensity of love for her baby and these songs are probably the most affectionate of the album. Kali actually wrote ‘ILYSMIH’ while her baby was napping beside her after giving birth which was heartwarming.
Lastly, “Sunshine & Rain…” carries the album as a single with its emotional passion. The meaning behind this song is showing unconditional love and devotion to someone through their ups and downs. This is a great connotation to the words sunshine and rain and it also refers to reality.
In conclusion, “Sincerely” was an astonishing album with lovely R&B elements. Kali Uchis’ lyrics were partially a love letter to motherhood that showed nostalgia and admiration. It puts the listeners in a comforting place to think about love and that’s what made the album a mesmerizing 10 out of 10.
