Review: ‘Spider-Man Unlimited’ is worth the download
Gameloft produces endless running, easily addicting game
If you liked playing SYBO Games’ popular Subway Surfers, then you will love Gameloft’s Spider-Man Unlimited, available on both iOS and Android mobile devices.
Subway Surfers was a popular “endless running” game a few years back where you had to run, jump and roll through a FUNCTIONING subway to get away from the police who, by the way, were chasing you because you’re a dirty vandal, and given that the game was endless, well, you’d end up getting what is deserved eventually.
Spider-Man Unlimited is a pleasant update to Subway Surfers in a variety of ways. For instance, rather than actually being the malcontent jerk, you’re the guy that beats up malcontent jerks, and as a superhero no less. Obviously, Spider-Man is the star, but he didn’t come alone (sort of). He brought friends, but really they were other versions of him from parallel universes. Instead of just one Amazing Spider-Man, now there’s an entire army of Spider-Men.
Each kind of Spider-Man has a unique costume, ability and rarity (ranging from Common, Uncommon, Rare, then to Epic). The rarity of a Spider-Man influences how powerful he can become and how potent his abilities are. As an added bonus, the higher a rarity, the more awesome a Spider-Man will usually look.
Spider-Man has appeared in a variety of other apps, such as Marvel: Avengers Alliance, the game adapted from the 2012 Spider-Man movie The Amazing Spider-Man, and the more recent sequel to the latter, The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
What distinguishes this app from the other Spider-Man games is the format from which the game is based, as well as the classy comic book graphics.
Unlike Subway Surfers, there is more than simply running and jumping. As Spider-Man, the job is much more complicated: you must climb walls, swing through New York, and, to my surprise, base jump from a building. And you have to do all of this while avoiding various enemies, traps, bombs and environmental hazards. This is especially evident when the hero has to skydive from an exploding aircraft without a parachute.
This game has a special currency called ISO-8. It’s mainly used to acquire a random Rare or Epic Spider-Man, though you can use it to revive yourself during a run.
You can progress through the game without the need of having to pay actual money for ISO-8 or energy, however it does make things a whole lot faster.
On a better note, the game runs very smoothly, even with all the countless explosions and such, and makes your eyes pop with the comic book look.
The best part of the game is the mid-game dialogue from Spider-Man. Every once in a while, you might hear him say “At least try to fight back!” after taking out an enemy. The music, however, really brings together the whole “Amazing Spider-Man” effect with the masterful orchestral ensemble.
And what is a superhero without a nemesis? There are a total of six different bosses that represent the Sinister Six. The Sinister Six are, in a nutshell, Spider-Man’s worst enemies. Some familiar members of the group are Green Goblin, Electro and Doctor Octopus.
Pros: Awesome graphics, dialogue, music and overall gameplay, as well as a decent story. Plus it’s free.
Cons: Your limited energy takes time to restore, and ISO-8 is somewhat difficult to acquire unless you pay for it.
Overall Impression: The game is definitely worth playing. It’s one of the best endless running games out there and is easy to get addicted to.
You’ll love this game if: You loved Subway Surfers, Spider-Man or running games in general.
