Top 10 movies of 2014
This year had its share of interesting films. Staff writer Lambert Mathieu was asked to rank the best of the best.
1.Dawn of the Planet of the Apes- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a science fiction film directed by Matt Reeves that shows how easily a society can be ruined. Ten years after a worldwide pandemic, Apes that have survived are drawn into a war with humans survivors held up in San Francisco.
2.Guardians of the Galaxy- Guardians of the Galaxy is a Marvel film by James Gunn where the main characters Peter Quill, Groot, Gamora, and Rocket Raccoon played by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper are abducted and have to eventually save the galaxy.
3.Interstellar- When Earth turns into a dust bowl, the main character Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey is sent on a journey through the stars with Brand, played by Anne Hathaway, to find different ways for the survival of the human race.
4.Edge of Tomorrow- In “The Edge of tomorrow” William Cage, played by Tom Cruise, is an officer who has never seen combat is assigned a suicide mission. He is stuck in a time loop that forces him to relive the day every time he dies. As he improves in each encore he comes closer and closer to finding a way to defeating the aliens.
5.Big Hero 6- Big Hero 6 is an animated movie about a boy named Hiro, voiced by Ryan Potter, a 14 year old early high school graduate who makes robots. He later tries to make a robot whose sole purpose is help people, until he finds out that someone is mass producing Hiro’s bots for themselves.
6.Captain America: The Winter Soldier- Steve Rodgers, AKA Captain America, played by Chris Evans, must adjust to his new life in modern day America and take on a new enemy: a Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.
7.The Fault in Our Stars- The Fault in Our Stars is based on the book by John Green and directed by Josh Boone. It is about two teenagers, Hazel and Gus, played by Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, who both have different cancer conditions and fall in love after meeting at a cancer support group.
8.Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is a conspiratorial movie directed by Francis Lawrence. In the movie, Katniss played by Jennifer Lawrence, wakes up from the Quarter Quell. She appears to be beneath the devastated District 13, and is then motivated to work with the rebellion to turn the tables on President Snow who is played by Donald Sutherland.
9.Lego Movie- A normal lego named Emmet, voiced by Chris Pratt, is unfortunately mistaken for being a “Special” and is brought onboard a quest to stop an evil enemy, “The Tyrant”, voiced by Will Ferrell, from taking over the world.
10.X-Men Days of Future Past- Doctor Bolivar Trask, played by Peter Dinklage, is convinced that mutants are a threat to humanity. To combat the mutants he develops the Sentinels, which are enormous robot weapons that have evolved into very effective killing machines. The Mutants fear extinction, so Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, makes it his mission to travel back in time to change an important moment to save their future.
