Best of toons
It’s Saturday.
I wake up to the smell of mom making eggs and bacon. There’s a strange feeling of butterflies in my stomach, and there is only one reason why: Cartoons.
For some reason this is the one small part of my life that I miss the most; cartoons on Saturday mornings were hands down the best part of my childhood. If you ask anybody what their favorite show was, you will get a different answer for every person.
No matter what your favorite show was, most will agree that those 30 minutes of our favorite shows made our weekends all the more merrier. Here are the top seven cartoons from my childhood.
Honorable Mention: Doug, Spongebob Squarepants, The Angry Beavers, Rocket Power, The Wild Thornberrys, Dexter’s Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Pokemon, Tom and Jerry
7) The Ren and Stimpy Show (1991-1996)
A show about the strangest of companions, Ren, a crazy Chihuahua, and Stimpy, an incredibly stupid cat, is oddly entertaining. This show taught children at a young age that any two people can be friends, no matter how different their personalities or how different they look.
6) Catdog (1998-2005)
A story about conjoined brothers, one half being a dog and the other, a cat. The series is placed in Nearbug, a town ran by anthropomorphic animals, and on rare occasions a human appears. The two heads have very different personalities. Cat has a more laid back personality whereas Dog just wants to chase after trash trucks and have fun. However, they still get along very well.
5) Aaahh!!! Real Monsters (1994-1997)
Personally one of my favorite show on this list. This one centers around a group of three adolescent monsters in training. There’s a small red creature with rabbit ears named Ickis, a tall “J” shaped monster with black and white stripes named Oblina, and a small chubby monster named Krumm who uses his hands to hold his eyes above his head and also has an unbearable armpit stench. This show provided a perfect mixture of fun, creativity and fright to make it one of the most popular Nickelodeon cartoons ever.
4) Hey Arnold! (1996-2004)
This classic show is about a fourth grade kid named Arnold who lives with his grandparents. It is centered around the life of a kid in a big city. If it wasn’t for Arnold’s classmate Helga’s wildy oddball way of covering up her love for Arnold by bullying him, this show would be higher on the list. Also, how could anybody forget the forever hilarious nickname “Football Head?”
3) Rocko’s Modern Life (1993-1996)
The top three on this list was extremely difficult to pick. I could have put these three in any order. This show is placed in fictional O-Town and it focuses around an Australian-immigrant Wallaby named Rocko who has three best friends: a gourmandizing steer named Heffer, a high-strung Turtle named Filburt, and his trusty sidekick and pet dog Spunky. Throughout the series Rocko goes through a number of unfortunate events. One of my favorites is when Rocko has to adapt to a new vacuum cleaner.
2) Rugrats (1990-2006)
The longest running show on the list focuses on mischievous toddlers Tommy, Chucky, Phil, Lil and Angelica who take part in activities that their parents aren’t usually aware of. It was the second Nicktoon to ever premier, behind Doug. It also showed that a simple screwdriver could fix any issue. There are not enough words to use to give this show the justice it deserves. Forever a classic.
1) Dragon Ball Z (1996-2003)
I still watch this show with the same love I had for it when I was a child. There are a lot of characters in the plot, but only three main characters, Gohan, Vegeta and Goku. Goku is the main protagonist in the story. He came to earth to destroy it but an accident altered his memory and he became one of the planet’s greatest defenders. Gohan is Goku’s oldest son, despite not having a passion for fighting, like his father, he still defends his family whenever the situation arises. He eventually settles down with a family and wants to become a scholar. Vegeta is Goku’s enemy. He started out as a ruthless killer wanting to take all power away from Goku, but he eventually he began to fight alongside Goku. Honestly all I can say is that you need to watch this show. It will always be at the top of anyone’s list.
Last month Nickelodeon introduced The Splat. From the hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., the channel broadcasts only 1990’s cartoons. You can check your local listings for your cable provider’s channel, but if you want to take a trip down memory lane one night, I would suggest tuning into it.
