Wrestling teams continue to break down competition

Junior George Haskins prepares to break down his opponent on Dec. 12 during the Plano Senior match.

The girl’s and guy’s wrestling teams continued to work hard as they placed high in last week’s tournaments.

The girls participated in the Texas Ladies Classic last Thursday and brought home senventh place. Despite their high placement out of 32 teams, the team still feels there is much to be improved upon.

“I think our team did well [but] there is always room for improvement,” junior Dakota Coffey said, “And we’re just gonna keep improving and hopefully, by state, we can bring home a championship.”

Coffey was one of three girls who placed in the tournament. She placed fifth along with Karen Aguilera while their other fellow teammate, Brittany Marshall, took second.

Despite placing fifth, Coffey feels that her hard work was not enough this time.

“I feel like I could do better,” Coffey said, “I dropped a tough loss to the girl in state, so she kind of dropped me and kicked me when I was down, and I gotta get back in it.”

Marshall, who placed second, also has the same view on her loss.

‘[I’m] disappointed because it was hard but also I had her pinned and I let her go,” Marshall said about her duel.

Marshall also commented on the the place the team took by saying the team that participated in the tournament wasn’t the one she knew.

“I think we could have done better,” Marshall said. “We’re a much better team than that.”

The ladies are going head-to-head tonight here at LHS against Paschal and Coppell. The dual that was set to be during the week of snow was resechuled to tonight making it a tri, wrestling against two other teams in the same event. The team is optimistic about the tri and believes they could win this although they admit it’s going to take some work.

“I think we’re going to beat them,” Coffey said.

“I think we’re gonna do fine because Paschal is a new team,” Marshall said. “Coppell [I’ve] won against them several times since my freshman year and Pascal [is a] new team. New kids, half of them don’t know what to do.”

While the Lady Farmers wrestle it out here at home, the boys will have their tri at Coppell at 6 p.m. tonight. Going against Coppell and Paschal as well, the boys are optimistic about this week’s opponents.

“I think we’ll be able to beat them but it’s gonna be a challenge,” junior George Haskins said. “Because Coppell is always a good team; they’re always competitive in all sports.”

Senior Cullen Walsh also believes they can win, but said it’s not going to be easy since their competition isn’t weak.

“It’s gonna be tough,” Walsh said. “Coppell is a good competitor, they’ve always been up there with us. It’s gonna be a fight to the finish, definitely. I’m not sure about Paschal but Coppell’s going to be tough. It’s gonna be brutal.”

Head coach Noel Peterson said he also believes the boys will take home a win despite unfavorable challenges that have presented themselves along the way.

“I always expect to win, you know,” Peterson said. “Is it going to be close? Yeah. Especially seeing that we’ve got one, two, three starters out, so we’re going to put back-ups in their position. Coppell’s very competitive, so is Paschal. It’s going to be a struggle. Job’s still the same, we still have to win with what we’ve got. It’s our goal.”

Last week, the team defeated Plano Senior 49-21, Dallas Adamson 78-0 at home, and finished fourth in the Titan Games tournament at Frisco Centennial. Junior George Haskins, senior Cameron Alaniz, senior Joe Head, and junior Quinn Bauer all went to the finals but did not win. Both the coach and the team agree that it wasn’t their best tournament.

“We didn’t do as well as we wanted,” Peterson said. “We thought we could place a little higher.”

Walsh believes that they could have done better as well.

“We should have placed better,” Walsh said. “We were seven points from third place. We had 124, we were just beaten out for the trophy. It was tough, we could have done better.”

Peterson said he believes the team will bounce back and learn from its mistakes.

“We need to learn how to seal the deal at the end of the matches,” Peterson said. “We get in tough competition we need to expect to win it. I think they understand that, they’re a good bunch of kids.”
