Obsessed: Work hard, play hard
Senior Matthew Nemecek talks about his passion for body building
Editor’s note: This is the second edition of “Obsessed” and this feature is on senior Mattew Nemecek’s obsession with working out.
Wake up go to school.
Go to class, then go to baseball practice.
Get home, then go workout again, then go to sleep.
This is the daily schedule for senior student body parlimentarian and Bonehead, Matthew Nemecek.
This isn’t exactly a bad obsession, but sometimes working out too much can do damage to the body, especially muscles, so Nemecek only works on certain parts of the body a day, without wearing himself out.
He has a schedule for his daily workouts and doesn’t skip.
The only thing he cheats on is his diet. He isn’t on a strict diet, but he does watch what he eats.
For most athletes their exercise comes from practice, but Nemecek isn’t the ordinary athlete. Once practice is over he will either go to the gym and work out, or stay at home and do cardio and work out there.
“I like working out because I feel better about myself and it relieves a lot of my stress,” Nemecek said.
The start of his so-called “obsession” with body building was when he felt self-conscious about his appearance when he was starting high school, and he made a drastic change in his life.
Instead of sitting at home moping about not looking the way he wanted to look, he began to make a change by constantly working out during school, at practice and after school until he went to bed.
Since his sophomore year in high school, Nemecek has been building up his body to reach his goal of becoming a body builder.
Nemecek said his body building “role model” is Arnold Schwarzenegger because he worked for his body and nothing is “fake.”
Nemecek said the work is all for himself and nobody else. People tell him that he looks fine, but on the inside he feels that he needs to keep improving his body.
“His obsession with working out is his coping with issues and keeps him sane,” said Madalene Hernandez, senior student body and senior class president.
Determination is one word that stands out when Nemecek’s peers speak about him.
“He wants to be the best he can be, by pushing his body to the limit and going the farthest he can without hurting himself,” said Holly Weston, senior vice president of LISD liaison.
