The Farmer girls basketball team’s season is coming to an end with three games left. The team currently stands at a 13-16 record overall with a 0-10 district record. They will not make the playoffs after placing last in district after being realigned.
“I just think there’s not a lot of chemistry as there has been in the past few years,” senior guard Milan Norman said. “But the toughest part had to be district play because we played in a tough one.”
The Farmers have a -297 point differential in district and a -177 point differential overall. Head coach Catherine Williams says district struggles boil down to the quality of opponents with Braswell, Guyer and Flower Mound being ranked in the top 25. But Williams sees this as helpful.
The Farmers have seven out of 12 of their players leaving for graduation. They’ll have four juniors and one freshman returning.
“These younger kids, I’ve been preaching to them to [so they can] work hard,” Williams said. “Go game speed, work on placement on the court and work on our IQ.”
Senior guard Keelayna Mcclendon was confident coming into this year and felt the team was better than last season.
“Coming into district and not winning games was hard,” Mcclendon said. “Especially because we thought our team this year was better. But last year we won at least four district games. But this year we’ve got a lot of top 10 or top 20 teams.”
Williams believes playing against teams such as Braswell and Guyer helps the younger players.
“We’re playing in what I would say is the toughest district in Texas,” Williams said. “Being able to play against such great teams night in and night out, really helps our girls grow. You may not see it on the scoreboard, but they are getting better.”
