Succeeding beyond stereotypes
Senior Caroly Gallagher’s family believed serving in the armed forces wasn’t the right choice for her and would be even harder to succeed simply because she is a girl, but she believed different. Gallagher wanted to join the Army for the benefits like the GI Bill.
After high school Gallagher plans to attend UNT, join ROTC for four years and get commissioned in as an officer.
“I need money for college and I know that the Army will help me with that,” Gallagher said.
Gallagher has chosen to be in the Army for her career. She’s proud of her decisions she has made but her parents were quite nervous because they didn’t know much about the Army and were afraid she would get hurt.
“At first they were against it, they thought I was signing away my life,” Gallagher said. “Then I told them all the benefits and how I could stay home because I was Reserves. So they decided it would be a good idea.”
With less than one month left of school Gallagher can now look back to her decision and know she has made the best one for herself. She knows she won’t regret any decisions she has made regarding her future.
“I just don’t give up on things a lot, and I think that’s a great trait about me,” Gallagher said.
Gallagher has a set future and is ecstatic that she has supporting friends and family by her.
“I am really proud of her; that is a big step in someone life and it’s a big decision to dedicate yourself to which says a lot about her character,” Gallagher’s best friend Deandre Carr said.
