Get to know Number 3 Sophia Lam as she reflects on her high school experience

Q: What’s your favorite song artist and why?

A: “My favorite song artist currently is Tyler, the Creator. I like how he doesn’t have a set music genre.”

Q: If you had a superpower, what would it be and what’s the first thing you would do?

A: “If I had a superpower I would want to be able to teleport. I would first teleport to different places around Asia.”

Q: If you could travel anywhere for a week, what would you do?

A: “I would try all the different foods I’ve never had and go sightseeing and shopping.”

Q: What animal best represents you as your spirit animal and why?

A: “I think my spirit animal would be a panda because I have a lot of determination when it comes to achieving goals and I’m also an introvert at times.”

Q: What are three things you would bring to a stranded island and what would you do with them?

A: “Three things I would bring to a stranded island is a machete, pots and a fire-making kit. I would use the machete as a means of protection and a way to get resources to build a shelter. The pots would be used to cook and boil water to drink. The fire-making kit will be used to make fire to cook/boil water and keep me warm if it gets cold at night.”

Q: What college will you attend? What is your intended major?

A: “I am attending the University of Texas at Austin and I’m planning to major in biochemistry.”

Q: What extracurriculars have you been in throughout high school?

A: “I have been in Interact, Student Council, multicultural club, National Honor Society, Health Occupations Students of America and Mu Alpha Theta.”

Q: What was the most challenging aspect about balancing extracurriculars and academics?

A: “The most challenging aspect was time management because it was hard trying to find time to attend all of the different school events and be a part of a lot of clubs while also making time to study and do homework.”

Q: What class was the hardest for you? Why?

A: “The hardest class for me has been AP Environmental Science because we got a lot of worksheets in that class and chapter readings that took me a while to do, so it was hard for me to manage my time and also do other classwork like calculus.”

Q: Who has helped you the most throughout this journey? How have they? 

A: “My friends have definitely helped me the most. Whenever I’m extremely stressed out or worried over something, they’re always there to calm me down and help me figure out whatever I’m worrying over.”

Q: What has been the most memorable part of high school?

A: “The most memorable part of high school has definitely been attending football games. I really enjoyed attending them with my friends and it was a great way to show school spirit.”

Q: What do you miss most about traditional high school over at-home learning?

A: “I miss getting to see my friends and being able to interact with other students that were in my class.”

Q: What advice would you give to your freshman self? 

A: “I would tell my freshman self to be more involved in school. I didn’t start joining many clubs or attending any sporting events until sophomore year, so I would tell my freshman self to branch out and become involved sooner.”

Q: What are you most excited about regarding college?

A: “I’m most excited about the freedom and being able to be independent on my own.”

Q: Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years?

A: “In 10 years, I hope to have pursued a career I’m passionate about, which for now is a physician assistant.”
