“I have a lot of friends in band, and [it’s] another reason why it’s pretty fun playing with them and why I’m still in band.”

This week’s Farmer Focus is on sophomore Thomas Blair, who plays the saxophone in band. Blair hopes to master the saxophone.

Q: What part of band do you like the most?

A: “I like the instrument I play, and it’s just fun overall. We play good music as well, and probably the best part is it’s actually fun to play.”

Q: What is your relationship like with other band members?

A: “Pretty good. I have a lot of friends in band, and [it’s] another reason why it’s pretty fun playing with them and why I’m still in band.”

Q: What kind of events do you perform in band?

A: “Football games and pep rallies for the most part. I do enjoy participating in everything and [traveling] everywhere we perform.”

Q: What challenges do you face in band?

A: “I mean not really in band, but because I spend a lot of time in band, it makes it a little hard to do homework and get good sleep. But I’d say it’s worth it. I’m not complaining.”

Q: What instrument do you play? What made you choose it?

A: “I play the saxophone, and if I’m being honest it was kind of a coincidence. I’m glad I got it [the saxophone] because it is very fun. It was pretty hard to learn at first, but I ended up getting it, and I’m glad I did.”

Q: How have your directors helped you in band?

A: “I do owe it all to them, I wouldn’t even know how to play if they didn’t teach me — even in middle school all the way until now.”

Q: What made you choose band and not orchestra?

A: “If I’m being honest, I just like band music better. [Orchestra] was never really my thing.”

Q: What other extracurricular activities are you in? If you’re not in any, would you ever be in another extracurricular activity?

A: “I’m not in anything else, and I think I’ll stick with band. I do like it. I mean I’ve thought about [joining other extracurricular activities], but the band really is for me.”
