A small party was held at Harmon for staff and their families only on Nov. 19 with student helpers taking over the booths and concession stands.
“It was really nice to see my co-workers and their families to enjoy time with them,” AVID teacher and event planner Lezli Shelander said. “We don’t typically see each other outside of work hours, so it was nice to have a space to have everyone come together.”
The event allowed attendees to bring their kids and other family members as well.
“I was able to play games with the children that were brought over,” social studies teacher Miriam Calixto said. “I’m a big family person, so getting to know their children was meaningful to me.”
At the event, games were set up for everyone, as well as coloring stations, music and food.
“I actually really liked just seeing the students running the games,” chemistry teacher Amber Khan said. “Some of them were pretty creative, and it was enjoyable to have them working for us a little bit.”
Student volunteers signed up to work the stands and games of the events for community service hours.
“I’m thankful they took that step back to give themselves their time, so our teachers and families could be the ones enjoying and doing stuff,” Shelander said.
Teachers look forward to another one of these gatherings where they can mingle in their own space with fun activities for them and their loved ones.
“It’d be a great way for staff members to bond and just have that relaxed time,” Khan said. “I would definitely love it if we had more of those in the future.“
