Boys’ wrestling stays strong despite one loss

With a record of 10-1 and coming in first place at their first tournament, the boy’s wrestling team is off to a very strong start.

Head coach Noel Peterson’s expectations for the rest of the season are nothing less than what every coach in every sport secretly wishes for.

“To win of all the matches, win state and never lose another one sounds a little unreasonable, doesn’t it?” Peterson said.

With wins against Weatherford, Marcus, MacArthur (39-30), Western Hills (48-26), Lancaster (51-24), Springtown (60-20), Arlington Heights (63-12), Bishop Lynch (84-0), Western Hills (66-18), Frisco Wakeland (33-31) and placing first in the Birdville Ten Team Invitational, sophomore Chris Hamill recognized the loss against Arlington (21-44), commenting that the team was up against a very challenging opponent.

“I don’t think there was a way that we could win it,” Hamill said. “They had state places in all the weights”

Compared to last year’s season, Peterson said this year’s team is a lot farther ahead, regardless of the one match that has kept them from being undefeated.

“Last year was my first year, so there’s an acclimation period. Me getting to know my athletes, them getting to know me,” Peterson said. “We did a lot in the offseason, camp with the wrestlers, so we’re way ahead of where we were last year.”

As a way to be help the wrestlers achieve their full potential, the program has started using film analysis. Recording each match allows Peterson to be able to show his wrestlers what they’ve been doing wrong and how they can correct the mistakes that they’re making.

“I like it a lot cause I know in football we use it too, but since we do it in wrestling you can look at your mistakes,” varsity senior Joe Head said. “Cause when you’re doing it, you don’t feel like you’re doing it wrong. But when you look at it, you know what you’re doing wrong, and you can fix it a lot easier.”

The boys have a home match tonight against Plano Senior and tomorrow against Dallas Adamson, both at 6 p.m. The varsity team has the Frisco Centennial tournament this Saturday starting at 8 a.m. at Frisco, and a home match against Pascal on Dec. 19. The last match for this year is the PESH Invitational which takes place Dec. 21 at Plano East.
