The Parent-Teacher-Student Association raised $349 in scholarship money during Homecoming week’s dodgeball tournament, which will benefit participating seniors.
PTSA President Shannon Walker says the organization provides opportunities for all students, whether they be athletic or artistic, and that raising this scholarship money for seniors is one of the many ways that PTSA aids students. Each year, PTSA looks to provide 10 scholarships for seniors to help with the cost of college.
“Every opportunity we have to make the transition from school to college for students is important to us,” Walker said.
A participant in the tournament, junior Jake Halter, said that he had a great time playing for a good cause.
“It feels good,” Halter said. “It feels magnanimous. It makes me feel like I’ve done something worthwhile.”
Seniors become eligible for this scholarship money by filling out an application, which requires a letter of recommendation from a teacher. Both the student and a parent must be in PTSA. From there, the scholarship committee will choose 10 students to receive the scholarship.
“Every opportunity a student has to fulfill a desire, a dream, a goal – that’s a success,” Walker said. “For some kids, that would be college, and that makes me feel good.”
