Medication Disposal Day will begin at 10 a.m. on Oct. 29, lasting until 2 p.m. here and at all district high schools.
An effective way to deal with the issue of prescription drug abuse is to dispose of unused or expired drugs. So Saturday will be dedicated to giving the public a chance to properly discard their medication.
“The event is held to provide an opportunity for the community at large to get rid of unused or expired medications in order to reduce the likelihood of prescription drug abuse and eliminate waste in the water supply system,” said Regina DeLoach, Safe and Drug Free Coordinator.
Junior Zach Heaton said that personal responsibility is an important part of the event’s success.
“At the end of the day, it’s people’s own personal decision whether they continue to abuse the drugs, or throw the pills away,” Heaton said.
Junior Ramon Avelar agreed with Heaton.
“Starting to do drugs in the first place isn’t very smart, but if you’re already hooked, it’s nice to have somewhere to go or someone to talk to about it,” Avelar said. “Why not try to fix the problem instead of making it worse?”
The dropping-off process is meant to be helpful and simple for all who desire to be involved.
“It is a drive up and drop off event,” DeLoach said. “People drive up in their cars and drop off their meds and receive educational material about how to properly dispose of meds in their home.”
