Expressing feelings can be very difficult. Through junior Josa Sutton’s eyes, however, it is an opportunity to lend a hand to his freshman sister so that she can attend church camp over the summer. This is why he decided to establish the business of selling his words – that is – creating poetry.
Spurred by his literary background and inspired by his cause, Sutton is no stranger to writing poetry.
“Eighth grade is when I realized that I was actually good at writing,” Sutton said. “I’ve written about 150 poems so far.”
By selling words, Sutton seeks to raise between $50-$100 by the end of the school year.
“I haven’t really had any requests yet, but I’m hoping that will pick up soon,” Sutton said. “I know it’s something that I can succeed in, I just need to find the right people to ask.”
For a small contribution of one dollar, Sutton has agreed to write about pretty much anything. You name it, he writes it.
“Anywhere from death, to love, to food, to comedy. I can write about just about anything,” Sutton said. “I had someone in my first period class, before I put the fliers up, ask me to write a poem about pickles.”
Someday, Sutton intends to make a career out of his writings.
“I’m actually trying to find a way to get some of my stuff published,” Sutton said.
Although Sutton can write about any topic, he still prefers the comfort of emotional subjects.
“I would have to say that my favorite thing to write about would be love or spirituality,” Sutton said.
