The Junior World Affairs Council [JWAC] will be hosting its annual environmental movie night on Monday. For the past five years the event has been held at Studio Movie Grill, but this year it will be held in the lecture hall at the main campus.
“It costs $20 to have it at Studio Movie Grill, and so we don’t get all the money,” English teacher and JWAC sponsor Jayne Keane says. “We have the facility now to do it here.”
All profit and donations go to UNICEF’s Tap project, which provides clean water and sanitation to children in need around the world.
“It helps raise money for drinking water for people who don’t have it overseas,” senior and JWAC president Melissa Wilkinson said. “I think it’s going to be really successful.”
The movie this year will be “Last Call for the Oasis,” a documentary on the United States’ drinking water supply, which Keane said is a major future concern for the nation.
“Only 3 percent of the water in the United States is drinking water, and it is being polluted and disappearing rapidly,” she said. “Experts say that the next big world conflict will be over water.”
This year the cost will be $5, which will pay for the movie, two slices of pizza, a drink, and popcorn. Keane said she expects a good turnout this year.
“We have sent them about $4,000 [the past five years],” Keane said. “That’s all we do. Our organization is community service.”
JWAC does many community service activities, such as volunteering at the CCA and the food pantries. The club also focuses on learning about the world and different cultures.
“It’s kind of been my home away from home,” Wilkinson said. “It’s taught me a lot and helped me realize so much. It helped me realize who I am and what I want to do.”
Wilkinson has hopes for this coming generation and its involvement in the world’s environmental issues and different world problems.
“I really hope they stop being quite so self-centered,” she said. “A lot of these people don’t know how bad others have it and how we are destroying the environment. There are people out there that don’t have water and don’t have food, so we can help change that.”
