Students get opportunity to hear speaker, watch game at AAC

Student Council, NHS, National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) and Texas Association of Student Council (TASC) will participate in Dallas Mavericks Leadership Day at the American Airlines Center on Feb. 2.

It costs $40 to attend this event which includes a ticket to see the Dallas Mavericks play the Minnesota Timberwolves and a $10 concession voucher card to purchase food at the game.

This event is available for any LHS  freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to attend. The flyer/permission slip is in the Student Council room [G144]. The money has to be returned with the permission slipped signed and given to Allison Stamey or Dan Moser before Friday, Jan. 23.

“We take a bus to Dallas, we go to the American Airlines Center, have a guest speaker talk to us about leadership, what it takes to be a leader, and what you need in order to become one,” senior Araceli Castillo said. “Afterward we watch the game, and it’s just a lot of bonding between the students and all the leaders around the school.”

The group will meet in the StuCo room [G144] after lunch on the day of the event.

Senior Carissa Baker said the biggest reward for her involves spending time with her classmates.

“I want to go to Mavs Day because the bonding that you gain from the trip there and the trip back is more than you will ever expect,” Baker said. “You can eat at any fast food place around there, and then the speakers that speak actually share their personal story about where they came from, and it inspires you do those leadership skills they speak about.”

Senior Robert Arellano is attending the event this year after missing the opportunity to go as a sophomore.

“I’ve heard it was a lot of fun,” Arellano said. “I’m looking forward to bonding with everyone and to see what type of [leadership] lessons I can learn from the speaker.”
