Pinky Swear you’ll be there
Meeting to be held to help families impacted by childhood cancer
Those wishing to become involved with Pinky Swear should attend a meeting in the lecture hall Thursday afternoon at 4:15.
Pinky Swear is an organization that started in 2003 after the death of 9-year old Mitch Chepokas who suffered from terminal cancer. Before his passing, he made a pinky swear with his dad, Steve Chepokas, that even after he was passed his dad would continue helping other kids with cancer.
The meeting will be led by junior and Pinky Swear’s North Texas Youth Leadership Council President Jarrell Lawrence as well as juniors and co-vice presidents Alissa Rybak and Kara Douglas.
“It’s a great way to help kid cancer patients and their families with financial and emotional needs and just really love on the kids,” Rybak said.
According to the Pinky Swear website, since Mitch’s passing the foundation has helped raise $4.5 million in financial support to help with the overall quality of life for children with cancer.
“It’s a very good cause, to help kids with cancer and their families,” Douglas said.
The meeting will provide information about upcoming Pinky Swear events.
“Every year we run the North Texas kids triathlon and we do some canned food drives and stuff like that,” Lawrence said. “This year we’ll be doing a roller coaster 5K on Oct. 2nd; you ride a roller coaster or roller coasters as many times as you need to equal the distance of a 5K.”
The organization is a way to get volunteer hours needed for other groups, such as Student Council and National Honor Society. It will also be a way for students from other LISD campuses to come together as one, though transportation from other schools will not be provided.
“This one’s going to have kids from other schools instead of just Lewisville,” Douglas said. “The past few meetings have just been Lewisville kids and we’re trying to expand it to other schools so it will be more diverse.”
