StuCo to hold voter registration
Next in-school opportunity to become a registered voter is tomorrow, Oct. 13
A voter registration table will be set up in the cafeteria during lunch on Thursday, Oct.13 for students who are 18 and older.
Students must be given the opportunity to become a registered voter at least twice during the school year. This will be the second opportunity this year; the first was Sept. 28 but StuCo members don’t believe it was promoted as well as it should have been, and as a result the turnout was not as high as they were expecting.
“I believe it’s important for everyone to at least go out and vote because that’s your say as to who is in charge,” StuCo senior class vice president Siera Kiplinger said. “If you don’t go out and vote then you really don’t have the right to complain about anything that goes wrong in politics.”
The voting registration is voluntary, and there will be another voter registration in the spring.
Becoming a registered voter is important as voters have a voice in who will represent the country the way they want it to be represented.
“[It is] your responsibility to vote and to select people that will represent your beliefs the best,” StuCo adviser Allison Stamey said. “So as 18 year olds, instead of yelling and screaming and protesting, the best thing you can do is go vote. Get the legislature in there, get them to help pass policies, get involved in the election process.”
Some believe that 18 year olds voting is a huge step to adulthood as it gives young adults the chance to change the government and let their voices be heard.
“If you want to see a change in what’s going on in either your town, or your state, or in your government in general, you have to go out and you have to vote and you have to make that change,” Kiplinger said.
