Raising awareness about FFA
Three programs in LISD to host community night
The Future Farmers of America organizations from Lewisville, Marcus and The Colony are hosting the bi-annual Community Night tonight from 5:30-8 at the Chester Boyd Agriculture Center.
Staff and students will be onsite to give tours of the barn and share about their newly assigned animal projects. It is free to attend and everyone is welcome; there will be a cookout with hamburgers and hotdogs. Attendees must RSVP.
“The event is held to gain a foothold into the community,” senior Lewisville FFA club member Megan Wandell said. “Our focus is to raise awareness of what the Future Farmers of America club is really all about.”
The FFA officers from each school will be hosting the event, along with all of the agricultural teachers, students and members of the booster clubs. The schools use the event to gain sponsors so the students can participate in field trips, competitions and stock shows at the Fort Worth Stockyards throughout the school year.
FFA became a national organization in 1928. Some students have strong ties to the program as they have family members who were once part of the it.
“I joined the FFA as a junior member when I was in the fifth grade and I have been in it ever since,” Wandell said. “My dad and uncle were in it way back in the day and it only felt right to follow in their footsteps and become a future farmer like they did.”
FFA students hope the community will come out to enjoy an educating experience and to see the pigs, cows, goats and rabbits they’re raising.
“We expect around 100 people to come out to the barn and see what we are all about,” Wandell said.
