Senior David Hernandez filed to seek election for the Place 2 seat on the LISD Board of Trustees. Early voting begins April 23 and lasts through May 1. Election Day voting takes place May 5.

Hernandez, who has maintained a keen interest for politics since his freshman year, felt students’ voices were not being heard. As a result, he decided to become involved when his peer and campaign adviser senior Isaac Southwell mentioned the idea of representing students on the school board.

“I feel I can give the students of not [only] Lewisville High School but all of LISD a chance for them to share their voices, their opinions, their interests of how they’re educated, of how the school works for them and not the other way around,” Hernandez said.

The position Hernandez is running for, Place 2, is a voluntary basis. Allison Lassahn, who also ran in the 2016 election but lost, is his political opponent. The deadline to file applications for Places 1 and 2 end on Friday, Feb. 16; currently Lassahn is his only opponent.

Along with the usual campaign signs and use of social media, Hernandez is in the process of developing a website with the help of both Southwell and senior Esha Harrish to promote his candidacy. Once the website goes active, people will be able to donate toward his campaign.

“All events and social media accounts are going to be linked to that website, as well as the page to donate as well,” Southwell said. “[Donations] can help us buy a completely new campaign sign or go to the month’s administration fees for the website, so anything [people] can donate will help.”

Because he’s still a student, Hernandez struggles with maintaining a schedule for both schoolwork and campaigning.

“There’s a time constraint on what I can do and how I can do it because I’m still in school,” Hernandez said. “I still have homework just like everybody else and most of the people that I interact with are students who are not yet [of] the voting age.”

Though invested in the election, he is also involved in Student Council, LHS student cohort, Lewisville Youth Action Council and interns for Texas House Representative Ron Simmons.

“I’ve known David for quite some time and I know he’s really dedicated,” Harrish said. “When he sets a goal, he really goes for it and his qualifications make him a good candidate for the role.”

The last day to register to vote for the election is April 5; voters who will be at least 18 years old by Election Day are allowed to send in their applications.

“If I win in the May 5 election, then I plan to represent all of the LISD students, teachers and parents to the best of my abilities,” Hernandez said.
