NHS will host a thrift store in the auditorium foyer starting May 2. Students receive service hours for donating clothes to the thrift store. All profits will be donated to Communities in Schools.
“I hope we sell as much clothes as we can and raise as much money as we’re able to for CIS,” sponsor Joseph Gonzalez said. “Last year, the fundraiser we did for CIS raised [about] $380. So, we’re hoping to do somewhere around that ballpark.”
Clothes collections opened Monday, March 18 and will end Friday, April 19. Students will earn one service hour for every five clothing items. Up to four service hours are allowed to be claimed for donations.
“I had a lot of clothes,” senior Eleanor Powers said. “Obviously I need service hours, but also I just had a lot of clothes on hand, and we were just going to donate them anyway to Goodwill. I figured why not do it here.”
When deciding what the fundraiser for this year should be, NHS president Briana Sibounheuang came up with an idea of the thrift store. She hoped it would encourage reusing what students have for a better cause.
“We’re just having a lot of fun planning it in the officer group,” Sibounheuang said. “We named it National Thrift Society. The promotion part, making the graphics and telling people about it has probably been the most fun part.
NHS has workdays for members to volunteer to help organize clothes and create signs for the store itself. Clothes in the store will average to about $1-10.
“It’s a chance for our school to come together to promote sustainability and recycling,” Sibounheuang said. “Thrifting is in right now. A lot of people, at least our age, are into [thrifting] as a hobby and I want to implement that into a wave for the community.”
