Faculty and students will face each other in a basketball match on Friday, April 4. Tickets are being sold near the cafeteria stage during lunches for $3 each. The game will start at 3 p.m. and end at 3:35 p.m, right at the end of the school day.
Student Council treasurer Foster McNeal organized the game. The basketball game had been an annual event until 2015, but it was brought back last year. Both staff and students have been training in advance for the match.
“[The] biggest thing for us teachers is to make sure we’re back in shape in preparation for the game,” boys basketball coach Jaden Wright said. “I also coach basketball, I’m around basketball a lot, so I’m able to sneak in some extra shots and try to get ready.”
The teams consist of 18 students and 18 faculty members. After getting a group of random participants, StuCo narrowed down the teams.
“For teachers, they approached Coach Wright [after] he sent out an email,” McNeal said. “For students, the [ones] who wanted to play approached me. Once we had the 18 students, we cut it off.”
McNeal also said the money earned from the game is not going to anything in specific, but to help StuCo organize more events. Staff are eager to beat students on the court.
“It’s a little friendly competition,” Wright said. “You know us, as faculty, we never want to lose to the students. Anytime we get a chance to compete and show our athletic ability, we try to do the best we can to go out and get ready.”
Students aren’t going down easily. Participant of the match and StuCo senior member Gabriel Lewis has been practicing, and he expects to humble the staff.
“Personally, I’m rooting for us,” Lewis said. “Coach Ryan and Coach Smith, I’m going to put them in their place.”
