Following in the footsteps of an older sibling can be challenging, and two volleyball players have discovered that this season.
Senior Stevey Vaughn and sophomore Kristyn Nicholson both have carried on their older sisters’ legacy this year, heading into the final game against Plano here tonight at 6 p.m.
Kelsey Vaughn graduated last year, playing only in her senior year as a hitter. Both sisters got to play together on the court last year.
“It was kind of weird, like, I felt like I couldn’t talk to her like I did everyone else,” Stevey Vaughn said. “She was really serious, she hated messing up. We’re kind of alike in a lot of ways.”
Lauryn Nicholson graduated in 2009, before Kristyn was even in high school. Lauyrn is currently working with two-time Olympian Cilene Drewnick, Kristyn said. Both sisters played setter, one of the highest pressure positions on the court.
“We eat, breathe, just live volleyball,” Kristyn Nicholson said. “We would play in the living room, or we would go outside and play. Actually she coaches at the same club I play for. I’ll see her there and we’ll play sometimes. One time we hit the hamster cage [in the living room].”
