Shortly after Gregg Miller’s hiring was approved at Monday’s school board meeting, the new head football coach and athletic coordinator was introduced by Principal Brad Burns at halftime of the boys’ basketball game against Marcus.
Miller will take the place of Dick Olin on the Farmer sideline this fall, following 12 years as an assistant at Katy High School, including the last seven years as defensive coordinator.
“I got to Katy in 2000, I started out coaching nose guards. Then I went from nose guards to defensive tackles, to inside linebackers [and] outside linebackers,” Miller said. “I became the first assistant in 2005 I was the defensive coordinator since 2004.”
At Katy, Miller was a part of one of the most dominant football programs in the state. While Miller was on the staff, Katy had an overall record of 146-19, and a playoff record of 58-8, including 11 district titles, four 5A state championships, and an ESPN national high school championship in 2007. Katy was also named the 5A Team of the Decade for the years 2000-2009.
Miller, who started working here on Wednesday, said he is starting to review the tapes of past games to help prepare him for the transition.
“Well I’ve already heard that the kids work hard,” Miller said. “I can’t say what changes I’m going to make because I’m going to come in and watch them, I’m going to watch all their games I’m going to break down all their videos, and see some of the things we could fix. I don’t want to send the wrong message and say I’m going to fix something that isn’t already broken.”
The Texas A&M graduate has a plan to start working with the team during the off-season to make a “foundation” to build a relationship with the players.
“We are going to take very small steps,” Miller said. “We are going to start in the off-season with spring ball. We’re going to install some things we feel like our kids can do. And we will build from there. We have to have a foundation.”
Miller said he was excited about the traditions of “Farmer Pride.”
“I love it,” Miller said. “I can’t wait until I can feel like I’m part of it and I’ve contributed [something] to it, instead of just inheriting it.”
