Every game counts. After Tuesday’s 6-3 victory over Hebron, the Farmer baseball team has four games left to make a run for a playoff spot.
“Coming into the season I really thought we were going to be a good offensive team, and we haven’t been very good with offense, but our pitching and our defense has been pretty good,” coach Mike Campbell said.
So far, the team is 4-6 in district, and 9-14-1 overall. The team is currently sixth in district 8-5A with the top four teams advancing to the postseason. Nevertheless Campbell said he believes that players have improved.
“Michael Aleman is one who has come a long way on the mound,” Campbell said. “He’s done a really good job pitching for us. Joseph Sitzman has done a good job at pitching. I think those two guys are the best obvious choices, who have achieved over what we expected.”
Campbell said injuries have put extra pressure on the pitching staff.
“Our top pitcher, Cory Duran, coming back from last year hasn’t pitched an inning because of a football injury,” Campbell said. “And Chaz Rasmussen who was our number two pitcher coming back from last year, has had limited innings because he had an injury. So considering the fact that we haven’t had those two guys pitch, or pitch as much as we expected, the other guys have done pretty well on the mound.”
The preseason went well. But the season has proved to be a hard one. But Campbell said the players have remained committed.
“I thought we had a pretty good offseason,” Campbell said. “I think the kids, when they go to the field, they do what their supposed to. And they work at it.”
The team still has a chance at the postseason, but it has some work still to do.
“[We’re] going to have to come together,” Campbell said. “They’re going to have to be a team. They’re going to have to be one.”
As for next year, Campbell would like to finish this year before thinking of another.
“Just get better, though we are not done with this year, we still have a lot of games to play, we still have a chance to be a playoff team,” Campbell said. “It’s just going to take a lot of work.”
The team hosts Flower Mound, tied for third in the district, Friday at 7 p.m.
