Farmers hooping for a fourth win

Boys to take on Mansfield Timberview in hopes of continuing win streak

Junior Marquis Williams goes for a fastbreak to make the shot.

With a winning start to the season, the Farmers (3-0) will be taking on Mansfield Timberview (1-1) tonight on the road at 7:30 p.m.

Senior Luis Hernandez is preparing for this game, seeing as it is a big game for them.

“If we win [tonight] then it’s a big win, because they’re good this year, so we’re focusing on [tonight],” Hernandez said.

Head coach Gary Collier said that Mansfield is a pretty good team, but the Farmers, ranked 19th in the state in 5A according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, are prepared to win.

“They were ranked in the state last year,” Collier said. “This year I know they’ve got a really good guard and I think we’re ready. They have a couple of pretty good guards on their team. I think we can contain them and keep them on a low scoring game.”

Tuesday the Farmers defeated South Garland, 63-43.

“This Tuesday was pretty good,” Collier said. “ The guys played very well and did a good job creating turnovers. We scored a lot of points. Everybody played and once everybody played, everybody’s happy.”

Collier said the offense is getting better.

“We’re not exactly where I want us to be just yet, but we’re much better offensively this year than we were last year,” Collier said. “We’ve got some guys who can score in a lot of different ways. We do a pretty good job of shooting the ball. I know the last couple of years it’s been something we’ve struggled with.”

Defensively, Collier said that the team is where they should be.

“Of course I want us to continue to improve, but we are really doing a good job of stopping teams from doing things that they like to do,” Collier said.

Hernandez said he is feeling pretty confident this year but it is not going to his head.

“It’s going to be a good season for sure,” Hernandez said. “We’re going to get better. We’ve got things to improve on. We’re not getting conceited, we’re not getting cocky. We’re not getting too comfortable because we started off good, but we’ve got to finish off good. So every practice we go hard, we pay attention to film, and still listen to coach.”

With the way the team is playing so far, Collier said he expects to win every game they play in hopes of a state championship.

“It’s one of those things that’s really hard to do,” Collier said. “A lot of your things have to be in order, the team has to be good and lucky. It’s almost like all the planets have to line up right for you.”

Hernandez said that the team is definitely going to playoffs.

“It’s just a question of how deep we’ll go into playoffs,” Hernandez said.
