Staying on track
Baseball team to continue playoff quest tonight vs. Hebron
The baseball team [3-2] finds itself tied for second in district with both Coppell and Flower Mound heading into play Hebron [2-3] at home tonight for the second time this week. The game begins at 7 p.m.
Players said that they’re on the track to make playoffs, and that their work has paid off.
“I feel really good,” junior Nick McQuire said. “The team morale is up; we play well together. We are facing some difficult clubs and different teams. We’ve been beating them and, if we keep doing that, we will be fine.”
Midway through the non-district season, head coach of 40 years, Stephen Campbell, was one game away from having his 600th win. The team was ahead of Round Rock 10-0 until the opposing team came back late in the game and scored nine runs.
Despite the close call, the game went to the Farmers.
“I think it was a great moment, and it was,” senior Lucas Hastings said. “He had faith in us; he knew we could win. A win’s a win, so he’s not going to complain.”
Before their game on Tuesday night, the boys talked out their weaknesses and strengths. They believe they have a better defense than offense, but, once they work through that barrier, they said they improve.
“When we get the hitting going, we are an unstoppable team,” junior Matthew Nemecek said.
After winning that game 7-0 with a shutout under his belt, Nemecek and the boys said that, despite some faults, they hit spots in key situations.
“Overall, we all played extremely well,” Nemecek said. “We had a few mistakes but we fought and hit well together. We played good defense and we executed when it was crucial.”
McGuire broke down how he prepares on game nights.
“Just have the same mentality,” McGuire said. “Don’t be satisfied. We always have to strive for more. Everyone on the team, that’s their mentality.”
The players said they focus on the little things and go into each game with a clear mind.
“Just working hard everyday, not taking any days off and just pushing to make playoffs,” senior Blake Smith said. “Besides hitting extra, you also have to mentally prepare yourself and come into the game focused.”
As the season progressed, Campbell reflected on his current and past teams.
“The best thing about coaching baseball is the game itself, and then the young men who play the game and relationships developed,” Campbell said.
