Senior Aaron Choun competes in the breaststroke at the Coppell meet on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

Last weekend the swim team participated in the LISD Invitational, with the boys placing third and the girls placing fourth. In the TISCA Invitational that took place on Nov. 20, the team surprised head coach Tom Gargan by placing in the top 20.

“[The teams did] better than I expected,” Gargan said. “The girls team placed 14th out of 74 teams and beat Marcus for the first time and were only one point away from Flower Mound who placed 13th.”

The dive team members have also had a successful season with senior Kayla Wofford taking first, senior Brian Fisher taking second and sophomore Allison Oropeza taking fifth at the LISD Invitational. Fisher broke a 20-year-old dive record at this meet as well.

“I got really excited that I almost messed somebody else up,” Fisher said. “So that was kinda bad, but it was good.”

Gargan commented that Fisher had a lot of pressure on him during the last dive after successfully completing six dives and messing up the next two dives.

“He needed 40 points on his last dive,” Gargan said. “[And then] Kayla Wofford took first in that meet, missing her school record by two points.”

With one meet and one invitational left before district, the team is working hard to prepare for district in January. Former state contestant senior Ethan McGee hopes to go back to state this year and win a medal.

“Sophomore year it was my first time going,” McGee said. “And I don’t know. I can make excuses all day but I just wasn’t ready.”

The swim team has the Kyle Tilley Invitational on the Jan. 9 starting at 9 a.m., followed by the Richardson meet on the 12th starting at 6 p.m, which also happens to be senior night. District begins on the 22nd at the Westside Aquatic Center starting at 5 p.m.
