Senior Ruby Garcia wrestles against her opponent in the Trinity dual that took place on Nov. 11.

Halfway through the season, the girls wrestling team has only lost two duels. The team beat Timber Creek, Paschal, Kimball, Plano East, and took first place in the Pink Panther Classic and fourth in the Cowgirl Classic.

“We struggled in the beginning,” senior Roxanna Nunez said. “That’s kinda when your teammates and coaches come in to give you that extra push to try to do better and make you realize that when you win it’s better to win obviously, but it gives you that motivation to keep fighting.”

The girls lost their first match against Trinity and then two weeks later also took a loss against Arlington.

“[We’re] not [doing] as well as I hoped we would,” coach Joe Daniels said. “In tournaments we’re doing really well in, so I kinda need to look at that, we need to have a good look in that…”

In the Cowgirl Classic, Daniel says that placing fourth was a bit upsetting.

“We were just out of the medals,” Daniel said. “That’s one of the first times since I’ve been here that we have not placed. I wasn’t real happy.”

Nunez commented that at the last tournament, the Paul Aubrey Classic, the team did really well.

“Most of us got medals,” Nunez said. “It’s been one of our best ones so far this year.”

During the break the girls will wrestle in the Mrs. Claus Slam on the Dec. 19 starting at 10 a.m. at Coppell High School, and then on the Jan. 2 in the Fillies Stampede at Grapevine High School starting at 10 a.m.

At the Tri State Classic the boys wrestling team placed third, and had two champions, sophomore Jordan Haskins and senior Chris Hamill.

“We had a good week,” Hamill said.  “A couple of us made it into the finals…Nikolas Gers, Jordan Haskins and me. Gers ended up getting second. Haskins won it, and Shaiden Rossenberry got fourth.”

Against Grapevine, the team had good results. With only two individual losses, the team beat Grapevine. In the Titan Games on Dec. 12 the team finished sixth overall.

“My captain wasn’t with us,” coach Noel Peterson said. “We probably would have finished fifth if he had been with us. [They had] good competition, good quality programs there. Jontre Charles was in the finals, took second. Jordan wrestled well at 113, and Jojo Yeboah wrestled well at 145.”

The team wrestles against Flower Mound today at 6 p.m., and during the break also participates in the Midlothian 6-way on Jan. 2 starting at 9 a.m.

“Against FloMo…I don’t know,” Peterson said. “Depends on what their lineup is. I think we have a shot at beating them. They’re competitive. If we can beat Flower Mound and Hebron we would be the big dogs in LISD.”
