For years, the volleyball team has tried its hardest to make it to playoffs but somehow always falls short despite the players’ efforts. This year, the team is determined and more focused than ever, hoping to put an end to the long streak of missing playoffs.

“I think we’re doing really good at the moment and I think we’re just going to keep getting better throughout the whole season,” senior Isis Williams said. “Our practices are hard but we’re definitely benefiting from them and getting better. Our ultimate goal is to make it to playoffs because we’d be the first team in I think like 20 plus years to make it to playoffs at Lewisville.”

District play began Friday, Sept. 7 when the team played against Nimitz High School. The team’s current district record is [2-2]. Recently going against Marcus High School, the team lost [0-3] on Friday, Sept. 14 and lost to Coppell [0-3] last Tuesday, Sept. 18.

“Right now we’re backing each other up, holding each other accountable and basically depending on each other,” junior Sydney Savage said. “So far we’re performing at a really good rate. We just hope to keep playing and performing at the next level.”

While reaching playoffs is the team’s ultimate goal, players remain cautious, taking each game one step at a time. With a goal as big as making it to playoffs, the team knows it’s important to advance gradually over time rather than getting ahead of themselves.

“We’re not at our peak yet, which is a good thing,” head coach Libby Rodriguez said. “You don’t want to peak too early in the season. What’s motivating me is just making sure that I’m giving my girls everything they deserve from a coach and what they need as players to be successful.”

Even though the girls know the path to playoffs isn’t exactly going to be a straight path to success, they continue to work hard and maintain a positive attitude even if they lose.

“I want this so bad for them,” Rodriguez said. “I want them to taste that success on the scoreboard. Whether it’s a record or making playoffs, I know deep down in my heart that these kids are going to be successful because of how hard they work.”
