Coming up on its sixth year of bone-chilling music and dance, “Le Ballet de Dracula” will be performed at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater on Friday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
“Le Ballet de Dracula” is a ballet written by art director Tom Rutherford and choreographer Kelly Lannin based on the novel “Dracula” by Bram Stoker. Inspired by the novel, Rutherford worked with Lannin for approximately two years in order to bring their spine-chilling but heart-touching ballet to life. This will be the ballet’s first performance at the MCL Grand as opposed to its previous performances mainly at the Temple Baptist Church which once stood in the same location as the MCL Grand.
While the ballet is inspired by the novel, it does not follow the exact story specifically and, instead, contains some original content written by Rutherford.
“We say long before Bram Stoker there were tales of Dracula,” Rutherford said. “This is one of those tales.”
Rutherford and Lannin have both expanded their ideas for the ballet in order to bring not only adults to the performance, but children also.
“It has a draw for adults,” Rutherford said. “We have tried to take the whole thing and gear it towards children also. Children can come in and enjoy the costume contest. The adults can come in and enjoy the dancing.”
To Rutherford and Lannin’s surprise, teenagers, and high school students in particular, have become attracted to the ballet.
“We hit this thing right on the money for the timing,” Rutherford said. “We released it a little after the first ‘Twilight’ when teenagers were starting to get into vampires and the romance.”
There are also other reasons other than the ballet itself to attend the performance.
“If anything, the special effects will blow you away,” Lannin said.
The MCL Grand is located at 100 N. Charles St. in Old Town. Tickets are $15 per person. Advance tickets can be purchased at www.lakecitiesballet.org or by calling (972) 966-8006.
