The art department will be opening its first art show in the main campus library on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Entry will be free of charge and both 2D and 3D artwork will be showcased. All art will be displayed in the library from May 13-24.
In the recent district art show, many LHS students were presented with awards and had their work showcased at the Grand Theatre in Old Town Lewisville. However, the LHS-hosted art show is being created to give its artists opportunities to have more of their work presented to students and teachers, art teacher Nicole Franczvai said.
All LHS campuses will be represented in “The Art Show.” Art teachers from each campus will be selecting about 15 work to be shown, which is more than what they were allowed to select for district.
It was decided that this year “The Art Show” would be a teacher-directed show while next year it will be jury-directed and any student will be able to enter.
There will not be any physical rewards given this year, but ribbons will be given out as prizes and middle school art teacher Ryan Bernard will be the judge.
Art student Kayla Doran has been chosen by Franczvai to have one of her pieces in the show. Doran has been doing art all her life but started getting more into it her freshman year and plans on continuing it long after high school.
“It started off as a class project we had, but my teacher really wanted me to go further with it and maybe even next year put it in another art show,” Doran said. “Our inspiration was we had to create something from within us. So what I did was I sculpted a face with clay and now I’m starting to paint over it with stuff to describe that art is within each and every one of us in a different way.”
Doran has a unique style similar to her favorite artist Vincent Van Gogh, a famous artist known for his bold colors and strokes.
“I like a lot of abstract art with a lot of color. Sometimes I like realistic but I like painting too. I think my favorite is probably pastels,” Doran said. “I kind of based my piece on my own personal style. I don’t prefer straight lines, I like a lot of the curved lines.”
Junior Riley Maslakow was also chosen by Franczvai to have his work showcased. He said he does not have a specific method or inspiration when creating his pieces, but instead constructs work from his own point of view.
“I like realistic art, something that is actually made to look like something, not abstract,” Mazlakow said. “At first I have a broad idea. As I go through it I work with the challenges that come up, and it eventually falls into a finished piece.”
Maslakow created his piece with wicker, a natural reed that hardens when it is dried.
“The media I used was really unique,” Maslakow said. “It was by itself a very interesting piece that was different than what everyone else had made, and it stood out.”
Maslakow began art his freshman year as well, and says his art has developed in an interesting way since then.
“It’s become more laid back,” Maslakow said. “I don’t take it as such a challenge anymore, I try not to be so critical of the end product. The way art works is nothing will ever go as planned if you’re making something, especially a sculpture or painting or something that requires a lot of work.”
